Mum buds turning brown before opening: causes and fixes
Botrytis gray mold is the most likely disease when unopened mum buds turn brown and look wet or moldy, but freezing weather can also kill buds before they open. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))

What it is
Botrytis bud blight is an infection caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea. It kills developing flower tissue, preventing buds from opening, and can spread into leaves and stems. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
Also called: Chrysanthemum bud blight, Botrytis bud rot, Gray mold
Plants affected: Garden mums, Florist chrysanthemums
Symptoms
- Unopened buds develop brown, water-soaked patches and fail to bloom. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
- Gray to brown powdery mold may cover affected tissue. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
- Flowers, leaves or stems may develop brown to black dead areas. ([extension.umn.edu](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/yard-and-garden-problems/gray-mold-in-the-flower-garden))
Causes
- Prolonged cloudy, wet or humid weather favors Botrytis infection. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
- Crowding and watering over the flowers keep susceptible tissue wet. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
- Freezing temperatures can destroy developing buds, particularly on late-flowering florist mums. ([yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/faq/i-recently-received-flowering-mum-florist-can-i-plant-it-outdoors))
How to tell it apart
Inspect several unopened buds without pulling them apart. Water-soaked browning with gray-brown mold strongly supports Botrytis; check nearby petals and stems too. If the problem followed a freeze, cold injury is another strong possibility. Brown color alone cannot confirm the cause. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
- Freeze damage
- Look for a recent freezing night before buds stopped developing. Freezing can destroy unopened buds without a fungal infection, especially on florist mums. ([yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/faq/i-recently-received-flowering-mum-florist-can-i-plant-it-outdoors))
- Water stress
- Check the root zone rather than judging by the buds alone: completely dry soil or persistently waterlogged soil points to a watering problem that needs correcting. Neither condition identifies Botrytis. ([rhs.org.uk](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/chrysanthemum/growing-guide))
- Bacterial bud blight or soft rot
- Water-soaked leaf spots with yellow borders, dark stem lesions, or collapsing upper shoots raise concern for bacterial disease. These symptoms overlap with fungal blight, so ask an extension diagnostic service to identify the cause. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
Treatment
- Remove visibly blighted buds and flowers On a dry afternoon this week, snip off affected parts and collect fallen infected material in a paper bag as you work. Avoid injuring healthy stems. ([extension.umn.edu](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/yard-and-garden-problems/gray-mold-in-the-flower-garden))
- Keep water off the remaining buds At each watering, direct water onto the soil, not the flowers or leaves. Water early rather than late in the day so splashed foliage can dry before night. ([extension.umn.edu](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/yard-and-garden-problems/gray-mold-in-the-flower-garden))
- Correct moisture and drainage Check the soil daily this week; water when the top inch feels dry, not automatically every day. Keep drainage holes clear and do not let the root ball dry completely or remain waterlogged. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/home-lawn-garden/fact-sheets/fall-flowers))
- Give crowded pots breathing room Move containers apart today so neighboring plants are not pressed together and air can circulate around the flowers. ([extension.umn.edu](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/yard-and-garden-problems/gray-mold-in-the-flower-garden))
- Protect pots from further freezing If freezing weather is forecast this week, move container mums into a cool, frost-free enclosed porch or greenhouse before temperatures drop. This protects remaining growth; it cannot restore buds already killed by freezing. ([rhs.org.uk](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/chrysanthemum/growing-guide))
- Start with care changes, not a spray University of Minnesota Extension says fungicides are unnecessary for gray mold in home flower gardens; UMass recommends preventive fungicides in commercial chrysanthemum production. For a garden mum, begin with cleanup and drier flowers, and seek a diagnosis if damage continues. ([extension.umn.edu](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/yard-and-garden-problems/gray-mold-in-the-flower-garden))
Prevention
- Keep flowers dry when watering and maintain space for air circulation. ([extension.umn.edu](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/yard-and-garden-problems/gray-mold-in-the-flower-garden))
- For fall plantings, space mums about 18–24 inches apart and choose a spot with roughly six hours of sun. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/home-lawn-garden/fact-sheets/fall-flowers))
- Choose earlier-flowering garden mums rather than late-flowering florist types where autumn freezes commonly interrupt blooming. ([yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/faq/i-recently-received-flowering-mum-florist-can-i-plant-it-outdoors))
When to worry
Seek help from your local extension service if browning spreads into stems, upper shoots collapse, or several plants develop wet-looking lesions. Bud damage alone does not necessarily mean the whole plant is lost; many plants recover from gray mold when conditions become drier. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
Safety
Mums can cause stomach upset if eaten and skin irritation after contact; they are also harmful to cats, dogs and horses. Wear gloves when handling damaged growth, and keep plants and clippings away from children and pets. Contact a doctor or poison line after human ingestion or a concerning reaction, and a veterinarian or animal poison line after suspected pet ingestion. No treatment product is needed for the steps above. ([plants.ces.ncsu.edu](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/chrysanthemum-x-morifolium/))

FAQ
Can brown buds still open?
Buds killed by blight or freezing will not develop normally. Concentrate on protecting the remaining healthy buds. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/greenhouse-floriculture/fact-sheets/chrysanthemum-diseases))
Does gray mold spread?
Yes. Its spores move in wind and splashing water, so remove infected material and avoid overhead watering. ([extension.umn.edu](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/yard-and-garden-problems/gray-mold-in-the-flower-garden))
Should I water mums every day?
Check daily, but water according to soil moisture. UMass advises watering fall flowers when the top inch is dry. ([umass.edu](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/home-lawn-garden/fact-sheets/fall-flowers))
Will fertilizer fix the brown buds?
Fertilizer is not the recommended treatment for gray mold. Avoid extra fall feeding that encourages frost-prone new growth. ([extension.umn.edu](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/yard-and-garden-problems/gray-mold-in-the-flower-garden))
